Context Located in a small rural community and within the residential area, these local neighbourhood shops are designed to sit comfortably within the context low density housing. The site slopes from front to back to a natural water course to the rear. Brief The brief was to accommodate 100m² of retail area with associated amenities, storage, parking and loading facilities in the most economical way. This was to address a main arterial road through the town while still allowing the possible addition of a residence to the rear of the site at some future date. Response
Local Neighbourhood Shops
The response was create building with a longer thinner plan on the southern boundary, orientated to the north. All parking and loading facilities to the north. This places the font of the building with the same setback from the street as the neighbouring homes and of similar scale. As the development is located within a residential area signage is limited, the decision was taken to use the landscape to offer additional visual cues to the development from the road. This was done by locating two larger flowering gums flanking the entry. Lower level ground cover planting to the signage. The landscaping is also used as a screen to neighbours, for privacy.
